America The Great, America The Beautiful, America The Delicious? The Declaration of Independence states our natural rights and freedoms as citizens of the United States. Although I am a native Jamaican I also consider myself an American. Being a part of the American culture and society is something often taken granted for by native born Americans. Little freedoms such as the things we eat, things we wear, places we shop, our religions, our hobbies, and things we say, are all things we are guilty of assuming the freedom of on a day to day basis. In places like China and North Korea people would love and value even minutes of the opportunity to worship freely or even express themselves they way they want. Almost everything we do daily is allowed because of the freedoms granted to us in the Declaration of Independence. As cliché as this topic may be, it can't be stressed enough. With Thanksgiving soon approaching it deemed appropriate to take some time to appreciate the little things that make up all the big things. Living in such a privileged and suburban city makes it very easy for us to overlook those outside of our immediate sight. It's harder to be constantly grateful when we're not physically forced to see people without all the freedoms and liberties that we have. However, it is essential that we learn how to be constantly appreciative of the little freedoms bestowed upon us that we use to our advantage daily because without them, we'd be a mess!

It is very important to recognize how much of an impact the Declaration has on our lives today. It guarantees us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and we still live by those ideals today. I like how you compare our freedoms to the lack of freedoms in countries like North Korea. Also, I like how you are a native Jamaican, and you are able to appreciate the freedoms and opportunities that you are given in the United States. Nice job, Sunita!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Troy is so privileged and we never see how much we actually do have. We don't know what it is really like to not have the freedoms that we are granted everyday. We take them for granted. Especially living in this day and age i think that we need to look around and take it all in every once and a while and maybe that could make us better people.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys! You're both superstars :)
